songs

It had been too long since I'd done one of these.

Down in the Valley - The Head and the Heart
Strangeness and Charm - Florence + The Machine
Touch The Sky Upside Down - Old Boy's Club
Two Small Deaths - Wye Oak
Staring at the Sun - TV On the Radio
Cradle - The Joy Formidable
Wild Thing - Noah & The Whale
L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N. - Noah & The Whale
HipHop Animal - Old Boy's Club

Thanks Lisa for the Florence. I'm a big fan.
I stole the The Head and the Heart from my newsfeed, courtesy of Thomas. I just remembered that I have a ton of songs from him on my computer somewhere. I should bring a new batch into my iTunes one of these days.
You kids should all look up Old Boy's Club on facebook.
The placement of their apostrophe makes me think that they're the club of the guy in that awful Korean film (and by awful I mean critically acclaimed, but I also mean a man cuts out his own tongue and unknowingly fucks his daughter).

Love always,
Clara

oh hi football!

What was the name of that math teacher in IS who really liked the Steelers?
I seriously can't remember her name. It's really bothering me.
Anyway, my condolences to her. Go Packers!

I went to a Super Bowl party at ADPhi, the literary frat, tonight. That was fun. We drank beer and played bananagrams, and some football happened, and I met a man in a top hat.

Now I'm downloading music.

Lean Into the Light - Iron & Wine
Nicest Thing - Kate Nash
I Fell Off My Name - Faded Paper Figures
Empire - Jukebox the Ghost
Set Fire to the Rain - Adele
Girls Like You - The Naked and Famous
Your Body is a Machine - The Good Natured
New Hampshire - Matt Pond PA
All Of This - The Naked and Famous
Night Skate (Lupe Fiasco + Oh Land) - Tweed Blazer

Tweed Blazer may or may not be Sam. You may or may not be advised to look him up on soundcloud.
Also, Thomas and David both contributed selections to this batch of music. They sure do have good tastes in music.

Speaking of people with good taste, my friend and neighbor Ivy has a blog! It's cool! And she has good taste, so you should check it out.

Love always,
Clara

i'm leaving in half an hour

Goodbye Switzerland! It's been real! See you in May!
And maybe in March if Mom's women's conference isn't in the middle of midterms. We'll see about that.

Of course, I couldn't leave without one last music binge before I get on that airplane. It's a long flight, you know.

Home is Wherever I'm With You - Kid Cudi + Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros
Save Me - Nicki Minaj
Fearless - Taylor Swift
For the First Time - The Script
This Is Why We Fight - The Decemberists
Rise to Me - The Decemberists
Away Frm U - Oberhofer
Bang Bang Bang - Mark Ronson & The Business intl
Coca Cola - Little Red
Fade to Black - MNDR
It's Alright - Little Red
Pyramid - Planes
The Recluse (Nero Remix) - Plan B
Time of my Life - Patrick Wolf
Twice - Little Dragon
Cold War - Janelle Monae
Robots - Jamie Woon
The Water - Johnny Flynn & Laura Marling

The last two thirds of that are from my extensive collection of Thomas's tunes. That kid and his music are great, although I am very very angry with him, as he could probably tell from my phone call last night.

Next time you hear from me, I'll be in America.

Love always,
Clara

tunes from thomas!

Once again, the lovely Thomas has given me a USB-worth of songs.
He really is fantastic like that.

As I tend to do, I'm only adding them to my library 20-or-so at a time. I want sufficient time to pay attention to each song.

Blow It Up - The Vaccines
Have A Nice Day - Stereophonics
The King and All of His Men - Wolf Gang
Medicine - Alex Winston
Mouthful Of Diamonds - Phantogram
My Life - JJ
Qwerty finger - Everything Everything
Silver Soul - Beach House
Splash (feat. Coco) - Sub Focus
Tokyo (Vampires & Werewolves) - The Wombats
Undertow - Warpaint
When the Night Kills the Day - Lauren Pritchard
Wonderman (feat. Ellie Goulding) - Tinie Tempah
Zebra - Beach House
Intelligentactile 101 - Jesca Hoop

I'm going to be dropping by ISB tomorrow, so I can give Thomas the USB back and say hello to Mr. Tom and MT and the rest.
Get ready, guys.

Love always,
Clara

I just downloaded a bunch of new music! At Thomas's recommendation, seeing as his musical tastes have greatly influenced my own in the last year.
Some are of my own choosing though.
Such as TSwift.

Judy Flame - Laura Veirs
Blue Beard - Band of Horses
Simple Man - Alessi's Ark
Space - Martha Tilston
Oviedo - Blind Pilot
Made by Maid - Laura Marling
I Go to Sleep - Sia

Lonelily - Damien Rice
Hazelton - Justin Vernon
Autumn Song - Will Cookson
So This Is Goodbye - William Fitzsimmons
Funeral Dress - William Fitzsimmons

So it appears that I'm obsessed with Thomas today?
Not the case entirely.
Okay kind of.
Whatever.

Love always,
Clara

thomas is a blogger!

So, if this isn't your first time here, I'm sure you've read about Thomas by now. He basically cracks me up on a daily basis.
And now, he has a blog! So he can continue to crack me up, even while I'm over here in america!
Obviously the only reason he created this blog was for my entertainment, but you can read him too!

I am so excited.

Also, I've got a shoutout in the first post, which is brilliant. Go read that first, so that you can read about me, and because that makes the most sense chronologically.
Love always,
Clara

packing

It's hard to commit to carrying three weeks worth of clothes on your back. At least on the Camino there was no expectation to look good. On my trip, I don't think that will be the case.

I think I might finally be finished though. Hooray for that. Packing inexplicably wears me out so now I'm trying to put together an awesome traveling playlist.

I was trying to download a bunch of new music, but that is for some reason incredibly difficult lately. I'm so indecisive about music and I've just go this feeling that all of the songs that I love are already on my iPod.
So that got frustrating and then I remembered that I still have that big folder of music that Thomas sent me, so I took another bunch of songs from there. I'm not sure whether they're summer songs because I haven't listened yet, but here's a sampling.

I'll Hold My Breath - Ellie Goulding
Lights - Ellie Goulding
Salt Skin - Ellie Goulding
Your Biggest Mistake - Ellie Goulding
Oh No! - Marina and the Diamonds
Awake My Soul - Mumford & Sons
Eat That Up, It's Good for You - Two Door Cinema Club
Hermit the Frog - Marina and the Diamonds
The Outsider - Marina and the Diamonds
Re: Stacks - Bon Iver
Stranger - Noah and the Whale
Team - Bon iver
Thistle & Weeds - Mumford & Sons
Undercover Martyn - Two Door Cinema Club
What You Know - Alessi's Ark

In other news, I'll be absent until August 1st. Maybe August 2nd. I might stop in and blog if we find an internet cafe or something. If I don't, it's because I'm too busy being a backpacker, or because I've been kidnapped and sold into sex slavery.

Love always,
Clara

more songs (of thomas's and david's and my own)

It's one of those days when I really just want to zone out and listen to music and maybe start watching season 2 of Skins.

Unfortunately, I have a billion hours of math videos to watch. Literally. I calculated that value with a Taylor polynomial approximation, but the limit converges, so there is no error.
I'd love to use that in real life. It would be so useful in everyday interactions.

"Nice essay, but I didn't know what you were going on about on page three"
"The limit of the taylor series converges! There is NO ERROR"

"You're late"
"The limit converges."

"Do you know how fast you were going back there?"
"Officer, the limit of the taylor series I was doing in my head at the moment converges; I'm sure there was no error."

SO useful.

Anyway, I've been doing that, but I've also been taking extended slacker-breaks (I no longer call them study breaks; I need to be more honest with myself) and downloading music.
Which brings us to the following-

Bulletproof - La Roux
Your Love's a Drug - Leighton Meester
Everywhere I Go - Lissie
Blue Planet - Lake Heartbeat
Mystery - Lake Heartbeat
Every Time You Go - Ellie Goulding
Under the Sheets - Ellie Goulding
The Writer - Ellie Goulding
The Asteroids Collide - Alessi's Ark
Creature Fear - Bon Iver
I Can Talk - Two Door Cinema Club
Love of an Orchestra - Noah And The Whale
Mowgli's Road - Marina and the Diamonds
Obsessions - Marina and the Diamonds
Paris - Kate Nash
Don't You Want to Share the Guilt - Kate Nash
Sleep Tonight - Stars
Heart - Stars

So that'll keep me going tomorrow. So much work, I might die.

Love always,
Clara

another withdrawal from my reserves of thomas-music

Thomas says he should get his own tag. He might be right. I will call it "Thomas's tunes" and it will be a cousin of "Samlet says" because both have undue influence on this blog.

Anyway, the latest batch:
Are You Satisfied - Marina and the Diamonds
Wish I Stayed - Ellie Goulding
Sigh No More - Mumford & Sons
Shampain - Marina and the Diamonds
Moneybox - Eliza Doolittle
Lump Sum - Bon Iver
Flume - Bon Iver
Come Back Home - Two Door Cinema Club
The Cave - Mumford & Sons
Blood Bank - Bon Iver
Beach Baby - Bon Iver
I Have Nothing - Noah And the Whale
Simplify - Marina and the Diamonds

I'm a fan. Also, Daphna has renewed my interest in Magic Man, so I've legit downloaded their album (it's free!). I still highly recommend it.

Love always,
Clara

even more music from thomas!

I love this kid and his music.
At last, I have his USB stick and access to his music that isn't on the American iTunes store.
I was given this vast treasure, and I realized I couldn't deal with it. So I've made arrangements.
He gave me maybe sixty songs or something. And I took twenty and put them in my itunes and i took the other forty and put them in a folder. I can't deal with getting more than 20 new songs at once. I need to appreciate them.

The ones I've selected to appreciate first-
Cigarettes In The Theatre - Two Door Cinema Club
You Are Not Stubborn - Two Door Cinema Club
The First Days of Spring - Noah And The Whale
Our Window - Noah And The Whale
I Gave You All - Mumford & Sons
White Blank Page - Mumford & Sons
Hollywood - Marina and the Diamonds
Seventeen - Marina and the Diamonds
I Am Not A Robot - Marina and the Diamonds
Caesar - I Blame Coco
This Love (Will Be Your Downfall) - Ellie Goulding
Starry Eyed - Ellie Goulding
Under The Sheets - Ellie Goulding
The Wolves - Ellie Goulding
Number One Enemy - Daisy Dares You
For Emma - Bon Iver
Skinny Love - Bon Iver
Hummingbird - Alessi's Ark
Memory Box - Alessi's Ark
Rollerblades - Eliza Doolittle

That's what I'm listening to right now.
I had a crepe with ham and cheese and spinach for lunch today.

Basically my life is british music and swiss food.

Love always,
Clara

more music from thomas

I feel like such a musical anglophile right now, although I'm not sure all of these bands are British. Regardless, I just had an iTunes moment (at school, no less) and have downloaded the following, based on Thomas's recommendations.

I Felt Stupid - The Drums
Airplanes - Local Natives
Norway - Beach House
Black Wax - Dananananaykroyd
Modern Girls & Old Fashion Men - The Strokes & Regina Spektor
Someday - The Strokes
Laura - Girls
Rainbowarriors - CocoRosie
2080 - Yeasayer
Ambling Alp - Yeasayer
Little Shadow - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Skeletons - Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Also just downloaded, on David's recommendations,
Paris Nights/New York Mornings - Corinne Bailey Rae

If you want more of David's music tastes, predictions, and insights, he's started a blog of his own that I highly recommend. Legit, it's in my bookmarks. And that's legit, yo.

In closing, let me share a quote from my psychology textbook.
Indeed, the more a person's baseline frontal lobe activity tilts left, the more upbeat the person typically is. (When you're happy and you know it, your brain will surely show it.)
Love always,
Clara

music binge courtesy of thomas

This isn't even all of the music that he sent me that I liked. There are a few songs that are only for people who live in England (silly U.S. iTunes store needs to keep up), so I'm going to make him send those ones to me.

For now, we have these.

You've Got the Love - Florence + The Machine
Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up) - Florence + The Machine
Cosmic Love - Florence + The Machine
On / Off - Snow Patrol
An Olive Grove Facing the Sea - Snow Patrol
Little Lion Man - Mumford & Sons
Ghosts - Laura Marling
Blue Skies - Noah and the Whale
Unfaithful - Stornoway
L.A. - Amy MacDonald
My Delirium - Ladyhawke
Daisy Dares You - Daisy Dares You
Song for No One - Miike Snow (that's not a typo)
Machines - Biffy Clyro
Shark In the Water (Acoustic) - V V Brown
Stars - The XX
VCR - The XX
Sweet Disposition - The Temper Trap
Running for Life - Eliza Doolittle (My Fair Lady reference! Hooray! Or it's her real name, in which case, that is also cool)
Skeleton Boy - Friendly Fires

I'm loving the overwhelming British-ness of it.

Love always,
Clara
